Teaching Tips - How to involve students in correcting mistakes

Hello Readers,

If you're interested in making your classroom more learner-centered, you may have already thought about placing more responsibility on your students in regards to error correction.

Here's a simple way ...

... to encourage students to trust each other's ability to make corrections.

1. Choose a common error in your classroom; e.g., irregular verbs or the present perfect tense.
2. Compile a list of sentences that includes the relevant error.
3. Write the list of sentences on the board or create a worksheet with the sentences and distribute them to the students. (You may want to include a few sentences without any mistakes to make it more difficult).
4. Divide the students into small groups.
5. Give students a set period of time to correct the mistakes.
6. Have groups exchange answers. Instead of giving the answers to the students at this point, have each group comment on the other group's work first. Encourage discussion on why their answers are correct or not. Have students write their comments on the paper and then hand back to the original group.
7. Go over the answers in large group.
8. Encourage discussion.
