How Does Our Language Reveal Us?
We all know that other people, for better or worse, judge us by our use of language. Putting our writing online or on paper can be even more dangerous, but did you know that how we use language can define how we think about...
...money, time and relationships?
Here's a magazine article (with video) (http://www.theatlanticcities.com/arts-and-lifestyle/2013/09/can-your-language-influence-your-spending-eating-and-smoking-habits/6842/) that explores the results of a study of languages with strong, or weak, verb tenses.
Basically the idea is that if we think (through our language) more firmly about the distinction between past, present and future, we are more likely to consider our present decisions in light of future ramifications - and if we don't, we are more likely to spend when we should be saving, among other long term life choices.
I'd encourage you to think about your use of language and make sure you are as specific as you can be as you describe, or think about, your major life decisions.
Be sure to leave a comment, or send us a question regarding the English language, linguistics or ESL.
Listen, read and speak. Make your new language your own.
My best to you -
